Orlando Pirates returned to CAF Champions League action on Friday night when they hosted Jwaneng Galaxy.

The Buccaneers went down 1-0 in first leg of the tie earlier this month meaning tonight’s match was all to play for.

Despite wave after wave of attack from the hosts, the first half ended goalless. Orlando Pirates finally broke the deadlock in the 65th minute after Evidence Makgopa’s deflected strike crossed the white line!

There were no further goals in regulation time, meaning penalties were needed to seperate things after a 1-1 on aggregate draw.

Unfortunately for the Buccaneers, the luck of the penalty lottery wasn’t on their side, as they went down 5-4.

Youngster Relebohile Mofokeng was the unfortunate one who had his penalty kick saved by the goalkeeper.

The loss means the CAF Champions League journey comes to an abrupt halt for Orlando Pirates, at the preliminary round stage.

It doesn’t matter! – Jose Riveiro

“It doesn’t matter (what happened in the first leg)! It’s about us (today) to perform to our best,” the Orlando Pirates coach said as quoted by IOL.

“It’s our home game against a good team and an opponent that is already leading 1-0, so it’s a challenge, but we love the challenge!

“We’ve said a few times that we are coming from difficult results and in three different competitions,” Riveiro said, before adding that this might be a blessing in disguise.

“Sometimes those results are convenient during the process. To understand that when you are not your best and don’t have the proper mindset, you can easily look like a different team.”
