Orlando Pirates coach demands more after narrow win

Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro wants to see much more from his side than they showed in a sweaty 1-0 win over Polokwane City.

Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro was relieved to take all three points from a trip to Polokwane City but wants more from his team.

Evidence Makgopa netted off a setpiece delivery to save Bucs bacon on the road and Riveiro says they expected Polokwane City to make things tough for them.

Jose Riveiro demands more from his squad

Riveiro felt that his side might need to grab an early goal to prevent their opponents growing into the game.

“It was a difficult one, like I said it’s going to be before the match.

“They managed to reduce the tempo in the first half and again in the beginning of the second half.

“We struggled to find continuity in our game, but anyway I think we did quite good in the first half getting clear chances to get an early lead,” Riveiro told SuperSport TV.

Only three of Orlando Pirates’ 14 shots at goal were on target including Makgopa’s headed winner.

Deon Hotto delivered the inch-perfect free kick into the box which Makgopa rose to meet but that was a moment of quality on an afternoon of frustration.

The coach felt that his side should have put more past Polokwane City.

Sipho Chaine did his bit. The Pirates keeper dealt with efforts from Thabang Matuludi and Mokibelo Ramabu as Polokwane City started the second half brightest.

Orlando Pirates get lucky

Riveiro admitted that Orlando Pirates were lucky to score when they did to put the game away.

“Luckily we managed to score from a set-piece,” Orlando Pirates coach Riveiro said.

“We should have went on to score (again) in the last minutes, but it was not easy. They were defending well, man-marking and it’s always difficult. But overall, I think we did a good job and deserve the final result.”
