Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp has tipped goalkeeper, Bruce Bvuma to take over from Itumeleng Khune as the club’s first-choice gloveman in the not-too-distant future.

The German mentor handed the 23-year-old a rare league appearance in the 1-0 win at home to Maritzburg United over the weekend, making him the third keeper used by the club since the beginning of 2019.

It was only his second PSL start this season, and his third overall, but the youngster has done enough to catch the eye of national coach Stuart Baxter, who included him in the squad to face Libya later in the month.

Bvuma has also impressed Middendorp, who looks set to give him an extended run in the starting line-up ahead of experienced duo Virgil Vries and Daniel Akpeyi who are internationals at Namibia and Nigeria respectively.

The German told KickOff he had held back on involving him against fierce rivals Orlando Pirates in the 1-1 Derby draw, opting for Akpeyi instead.

“I think if there’s anybody actually [getting recognition] here in South Africa for not being shy to bring in young players, I should be one of the five candidates,” he said.

“But the decision to throw him in and probably destroy him [against Orlando Pirates] was not right. Now, he has a little more of a clear settlement, and he’s a goalkeeper who can certainly be number-one in the next two or three years, there’s no doubt about it.”

Kaizer Chiefs are currently seventh on the PSL log, having just registered two wins on the bounce, and are eight points behind log-leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who leapfrogged Pirates with a victory over Maritzburg on Tuesday.

Their next fixture is on Friday, 15 March against Supersport United at Mbombela Stadium.

Kick-off is at 20:00.
