Maart, Khune or Dolly? Kaizer Chiefs captaincy dilemma

Kaizer Chiefs interim coach Cavin Johnson has had his say on whether Yusuf Maart would be stripped off his captaincy.

Kaizer Chiefs interim coach Cavin Johnson says Yusuf Maart will remain as club captain going forward.

The 28-year-old has captain Amakhosi since Itumeleng Khune was suspended and stripped of his captaincy in December last year.

Keagan Dolly, who also served as club vice-captain, hardly played this season due to recurring injuries.

Maart’s role as captain has been questioned by some Kaizer Chiefs fans but Johnson has backed his player to lead.

“On Yusuf, Yusuf’s been the captain now for the last eight games, we’ve only conceded one goal,” Johnson told the media.

“So he’s done a good job as far as keeping his troops together on the pitch and going forward with him.

Yusuf Maart to continue as Kaizer Chiefs skipper

“And maybe he doesn’t look like he’s a flair player or a ‘good player’ from outside. But I think he does a good job for the team. And ja, we’re happy with these performances,” he said after the Soweto Derby.

Maart’s leadership also came into question during Kaizer Chiefs’s match against Orlando Pirates.

His reckless tackle on Monnapule Saleng early into the Soweto Derby was one of the talking points. Many football fans and pundits believe the Chiefs captain should have been sent off for a career-threatening challenge.

Former referee Victor Hlungwane has suggested referee Jelly Chavani should have given Maart a straight red card.

It appears for now that Maart will continue to lead Kaizer Chiefs even with the return of Khune and Dolly.

Amakhosi are back in action later this month when they travel to the Cape to meet Cape Town CIty. The two teams face each other in a DStv Premiership match on 30 March.

Chiefs have only won just one of their last five matches this year in all competitions.
