Daniel Akpeyi and ‘Die Hond’ Bernard Parker had a very interesting 2021 for Kaizer Chiefs across the PSL, domestic football and during Amakhosi’s historic CAF Champions League run.
This exclusive series focuses on how each Amakhosi player faired during 2021 across all competitions. This article looks at how Akpeyi and Parker performed for Chiefs this year.
Akpeyi established himself as Stuart Baxter’s first-choice goalkeeper. In what was a tight race between Bruce Bvuma, Itumeleng Khune and Brandon Peterson. He was the most consistent and safe in goal, earning selection in Chiefs’ first-ever CAF Final.
Nigeria’s keeper has been selected for their AFCON squad after his fine showings in the PSL. He produced some top saves and brought composure to his back four.
However, Akpeyi did have a few games where he conceded quite a few goals like the 4-1 loss to MaMkhize’s Royal AM and the 3 goals conceded in the final although he could do very little to stop most of those goals. The finishers with world class in the final well the defense fell apart against AM.
Akpeyi was the most consistent and solid option in goal and did enough to establish himself as Amakhosi’s goalkeeper for 2021.
Bernard Parker had one of the most interesting seasons of his career.
He had to truly show that he is ‘Die Hond’ as he came under heavy criticism at the start of the year, struggling for form in front of goal.
He then moved into the unfamiliar role of the midfield. Parker toughed it out and found his form towards the end of the year. He showed his class when he scored a brace against SuperSport United to secure a 2-1 win.
This would spark a rejuvenation in his form and prove that form is temporary and class is permanent.
