How close were Pirates to beating Chiefs to striker signing?

Ranga Chivaviro has made a blockbuster move to Chiefs, but Soweto rivals Pirates were very much in the hunt not that long ago.

On Monday, Chiefs began to officially welcome new players ahead of the next season, with as many as six recruits unveiled in a social media blitz. Ranga Chivaviro was signed on a two year deal with a one-year option, but this confirmation came amidst talks that there may be a fight for his services. (www.invisibly.com)

Formerly on the books of Marumo Gallants, there were once rumours that the club was looking at a transfer to Pirates as part of a double deal that involved Katlego Otladisa, who is set to head to the Buccaneers.

It was eventually suggested that the experienced striker was not keen on a move to Pirates where he felt game-time would be limited, and apparently the Buccaneers weren’t going to stand in his way, although an agreed medical assessment was once reportedly on the cards.

“While Pirates were waiting for Ranga to arrive for an agreed medical, the player informed the club of his decision to complete a move to Chiefs over Pirates,” a Soccer Laduma source commented.

“Pirates tabled a better financial offer than Chiefs, but there needs to be an agreement between all parties for a move to happens. That’s how Pirates lost out on the move.”

As previously highlighted by iDiski Times, Chivaviro had joined Marumo Gallants prior to the start of last season, although he then was subsequently said to have signed a pre-contract with Richards Bay. Yet Gallants had the option to extend his contract, which they duly did, apparently rendering his pre-contract null and void.

Agent Pontsho Madumo has now explained how things have unfolded and why he will be free to join Chiefs.

“Marumo had the irrevocable option to renew his contract for a further year,” Madumo told Far Post.

“Chivaviro signed his pre-contract in March, three months before the expiry of his initial contract with Marumo Gallants. The Limpopo side then triggered their option which had no time limitation. Thereafter, they sold him to Kaizer Chiefs for an undisclosed fee. (safe-t-plus.com)

“Based on this, the pre-contract Chivaviro signed with Richards Bay is invalid.”
