Former Maritzburg United striker Bongokuhle Hlongwane has revealed the reason behind turning down a move to DStv Premiership powerhouse Mamelodi Sundowns.

Hlongwane put speculation on a move to the defending league champions to bed after signing for Major Soccer League (MLS) side Minnesota United.

The Bafana Bafana star striker signed a three-year-contract with the American based side and will jet out of the country in the coming days following months of speculation over his immediate future.

According to Hlongwane, Mamelodi Sundowns were leading the race to sign him however he was not willing to put his dream of playing on hold for the Brazilians.

Why Hlongwane rejected Mamelodi Sundowns…

“There were teams in South Africa that were interested,” Bongokuhle Hlongwane told KickOff.

“Mamelodi Sundowns were leading the race. I signed for Minnesota United because I wanted to realise my dream of playing overseas.”

I’m going there to fight and work!

“What has happened now, it is something that I’ve always wanted, but didnt expect it to be this soon but luckily it has happened,” – Hlongwane told SoccerLaduma regarding his move to MLS side Minnesota United FC.

“They’ve been following me. It makes me happy to see that my hard work has been noticed, not only in South Africa, but in other countries too.

“So, it gives me motivation to go there and work hard and show them why they signed me and even do more. I want to go there and fight. I’m going there to work hard,” Hlongwane added.

“I’m very happy in my life, this is a great opportunity for me and it can only avail itself if we work hard. It is a dream come true.”
