“Give us Pirates” Chiefs fans react after new MTN8 trophy was unveiled

Kaizer Chiefs fans are hopeful that Molefi Ntseki can be the man who finally ends their eight-year-long trophy drought.

Kaizer Chiefs fans jokingly asked to face rivals Orlando Pirates in the MTN8 after a brand new trophy was unveiled on Thursday afternoon.

After more than a decade, the Premier Soccer League have decided to change the trophy with record holders Pirates keeping the previous trophy they won four times in 13 years.

After the new MTN8 trophy was launched, some Chiefs fans demanded to face the Buccaneers in the final.

Chiefs fans desperate for a trophy

Last season, Amakhosi did a league double over Pirates and when the Nedbank semi-final draw was made, Chiefs management and players hoped to draw their Soweto rivals. Their wish was granted and the two teams faced-off on 6 May in a titanic clash. The Buccaneers eventually won 2-1 after extra-time and claimed the bragging rights.

Chiefs fans, players and management were left with an egg on their faces following the defeat and were mocked on social media for the rest of the season. The club has not tasted any silverware in over eight years and many see MTN8 as their only realistic chance of winning a trophy this current season.

Kaizer Chiefs fans want to play against Pirates in the mtn8.

Molefi Ntseki’s tenure as coach has started with a draw and a defeat. His next task is to beat the high-flying Cape Town City in the Cape. His task is difficult but should he win the game on Sunday, he might fancy ending Amakhosi’s eight-year drought.

The MTN8 kicks-off this coming wekend with Mamelodi Sundowns taking on Moroka Swallows on Saturday afternoon. Defending champions Pirates host Sekhukhune United at the Orlando Stadium in the evening.

Chiefs travel to Cape Town to play City on Sunday at 15:00 while SuperSport United host Stellenbosch FC at the same time.
