The incident occurred during Cape Town City’s MTN8 final penalty shootout defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns in October, with the midfielder having been subsequently charged and found guilty of manhandling assistant referee Cladwin Baloyi.

Makola and goalkeeper Hugo Marques were unhappy that Baloyi did not flag Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango’s perceived movement off his goal line during a penalty kick last year.

The Citizens chairman John Comitis confirmed to Sowetan on Wednesday that Makola has received a two-month ban from the Premier Soccer League disciplinary committee, which is set to kick in when the DStv Premiership matches resume in mid-February.

“Makola is suspended for two months, so we told him that we will see how things go [about his contract] after his suspension,” Comitis told Sowetan.

“We will support him through his suspension and continue to pay him. I do look after my boys.”

Makola could end his time with Cape Town City this year

Last year, Cape Town City FC confirmed that Makola had signed a contract extension until the end of the 2021/22 season. However, he is now only set be eligible to play on 3 April against Baroka, and it remains to be seen if he will be backed to remain with the club beyond this season.

Makola joined the Citizens on a free transfer in 2019 after seven years at Soweto giants Orlando Pirates
