Banyana Banyana kickoff World Cup campaign against Sweden

Banyana Banyana are just hours away from their opening World Cup match against Sweden in Wellington, New Zealand.

Banyana Banyana are just hours from their first match at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The South African women’s team takes on Sweden on Sunday, 23 July 2023 (kickoff 07:00 am RSA time) at the Wellington Regional Stadium.

This will be the second appearance by the African Champions, who first made their debut back in 2019.

After weeks of hard training and preparation, they work will be finally be put to the test against a strong Sweden side that is currently ranked third in the world.

Banyana come into Sunday’s match high in confidence after a 2-0 victory over Costa Rica in their last friendly encounter played on 15 July 2023 in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Desiree Ellis’ charges are yet to win a World Cup match.

Captain Refiloe Jane admitted that it won’t be an easy encounter, but she added that the team has prepared well.

“It’s a difficult game that we will play against Sweden, probably one of the toughest games in our group. We have played them before and it won’t be easy, but the preparations have been going very well from the time we qualified for the World Cup up to this day,” said Jane.

Banyana face their toughest opponent in years and Jane is hoping for a good result against the Europeans.

“I think we have done what we can do as a team and we are looking forward to the game, hoping for a good results based on preparations that we have put in.”

Sweden goes into the match as heavy favourites and are expected to brush aside their African opponents on Sunday. The African champions though have a few good players that might take the game away from the top three ranked team.
