Bafana Bafana could be without Keagan Dolly when they face Ghana and Sudan in the upcoming AFCON qualifiers.

This is because of Wednesday’s announcement by the French Football League (LFP) that none of its clubs will release players for international duty to certain countries outside the European Union (EU).

According to LFP, the decision which was unanimously voted for, is to avoid possible quarantine on the return of those international players, and this affects Dolly and Bafana.

Bafana Bafana will face Ghana in Johannesburg on March 25 before traveling to Omdurman to face Sudan three days later.

“In the absence of an exemption from quarantine for foreign international players made available to their national team.

“In this context, clubs will not make foreign players called up for matches outside the EU/EEA zone available to their national teams during the next international period in March,” said LFP in a statement.

In February, FIFA relaxed its rules on the calling up of players for the March international break, giving clubs the right to refuse to release their players due to different Covid-19 related regulations across the world.

According to the relaxed FIFA rules, clubs can decide not to allow their players to travel if quarantine would be mandatory on return.

And in Dolly’s case, he will have to be subjected to a 14-day quarantine period after the international break, and therefore, Ligue 1 and 2 clubs voted against releasing their players outside of Europe.

Dolly is the only France-based player in the latest Bafana Bafana squad, and his unavailability will undoubtedly give coach Molefi Ntseki a selection headache.

Ntseki may have to replace Dolly with a PSL-based player because of the limited time he has to prepare for the back-to-back AFCON clashes.
