Supersport United were denied a late victory away at Polokwane City on Wednesday evening. The old Peter Mokaba stadium played host to a rematch of the Carling Cup between Polokwane City and Supersport United; the match came after Polokwane City knocked Supersport United out of the Carling Cup with a 4-1 demolition at TUT stadium just over a fortnight ago.

Supersport United had a chance to eclipse Mamelodi Sundowns on the log, but Polokwane City restored parity in the latter stages of the game to steal a point at the death. Matsatsantsa had to beat Polokwane to go top of the log, at least momentarily, as Mamelodi Sundowns is currently on continental duty with three games in hand over their Pretoria rivals Supersport United. Supersport United were the best possible team to give Sundowns an early reminder of the competition around them if they were to keep their dominant streak going and win the league for the 7th consecutive time.

Will Sundowns ever relinquish their top spot this season?

As Supersport United saw most of the ball in the game against Polokwane City, they looked more likely to open the scoring even when Polokwane City kept throwing their own punches with less possession of the ball. Rise and Shine are showing their resolve on their come-back season to the Premier Soccer League as they kept Supersport United out for the majority of the game. Supersport United eventually found a breakthrough in the 78th minute when Etiosa Ighodaro came off the bench to open the scoring.

Polokwane City kept on searching for the equaliser after Supersport United took the lead, their efforts were paid off on the 87th minute mark when Tholo Matuludi grabbed an equalizer. It was too late for either side to grab a winner from that point, it was share of the spoils and an opportunity missed for Matsatsantsa a Pitori to reach the summit of the PSL log. This will present Mamelodi Sundowns with an opportunity to extend their lead at the top of the log when they resume their Premier Soccer League duties.

Supersport United will be dissatisfied with the result

Supersport United will know that they had an opportunity to pull a rare feat, to be top of the log on the same league with the ever dominant Mamelodi Sundowns. It is back to the drawing board for Matsatsantsa, but this will feel like a victory for Polokwane City; a newly promoted team already punching above their weight.
