Malcolm Marx may have missed a big chunk of the Springboks’ World Cup campaign due to injury, but that didn’t diminish his standing in the world order.

Somewhere across the 2022 and 2023 season in the build-up to the World Cup, the likes of Dan Sheehan, Codie Taylor, Samisoni Taukei’aho and Peato Mauvaka were all mentioned as hooker who’ve dethroned Malcolm Marx as the best in the world in that specialised position.

But he saw off all aforementioned challengers and it now the disputable No 1 Test hooker in the world.

Marx, who almost plays like an extra fetcher in the Springbok team, became the top try-scorer among forwards in Bok history in 2023 when he scoring against All Blacks at Twickenham to take his tally to 17 Test tries.

And according to Opta stats, Marx is still the leading No 2 in the world despite suffering a tournament-ending knee injury after the Springboks’ opening game at the 2023 World Cup.

Opta puts Marx’s lineup success rate at 97%, higher than any other hooker in the world. The Springbok found a teammate from 36 of 37 lineout throws in 2023.
