Malcolm Marx’s unexpected injury has caused a headache in the Springbok camp ahead of their clash against Romania on Sunday.

The injury to Marx is a huge blow for the Boks but Springbok coach Jacques Nienaber said that the team has enough depth.

“We have enough cover at hooker with Bongi (Mbonambi) and Deon (Fourie) in the squad, while Marco (van Staden) has also been training there and has been named on all our team sheets so far as a hooker option.

“We’ll assess our needs for the rest of the tournament and confirm who we are calling up as an additional player later this week,” said the Springbok coach.

The big question on everyone’s mind is who will replace Marx?

The obvious choice is Joseph Dweba but the Stormers hooker has only played a handful of games for the Boks and hasn’t had the best of games wearing the green and gold.

Highly rated fly-half Handre Pollard is a name many South Africans want to see. The 29-year-old World Cup winner could be vital in the latter stages of the tournament, especially his kicking game. He has been training with Leicester Tigers and should be an hour or two from the Boks camp should he be needed.

For now, we will just have to wait and see. Deon Fourie was named as Marx’s replacement for the Romania clash with Bongi Mbonambi now the only specialist hooker in the squad.
