Canada were often architects of their own downfall as missed tackles cost them on defence and handling errors on attack.

Italy went into half-time 17-0 up thanks to tries from Braam Steyn and Dean Budd. The Azzurri’s dominance continued after the break with Sebastian Negri scoring immediately. The bonus point was secured through a penalty try just before the hour mark.

The Azzurri did not take their foot off the gas, instead adding further tries through Mattia Bellini, Federico Zani and Matteo Minozzi.

A late consolation try from Andrew Coe aside, Canada did not have much to cheer about.

Italy dominated from the get-go and had their first try just seven minutes in. The Azzurri went through the middle from a scrum on their left with Steyn crashing through several tackles to score.

Another missed tackle from Canada saw Italy score again five minutes later. Some good hands from the Azzurri sent Budd to crash through a feeble attempt to stop him, the lock scoring a captain’s try.

Jake Polledri was at the heart of many Italy attacks. Shortly after half-time, his pass set Negri up to crash through a tackle and over the line. This following a sustained build-up which showed that Italy were picking up where they had left off before half-time.

Italy’s bonus point try was awarded due to a tackle in the maul from Matt Heaton, who was yellow-carded by referee Nigel Owens as a result.

Polledri initiated another attack shortly afterwards with a marauding run. Italy moved the ball out wide and Negri turned provider, throwing a superb long pass to set Bellini up to finish.

Canada hit back by finally scoring their first try in the 69th minute. Peter Nelson weaved his way through the Italy defence, setting up Coe, who finished with a superb step and went over in the corner.

Kingsley Jones’ men had only just seen a try from Tyler Ardron disallowed due to a knock-on from Ben LeSage in the build-up. It was far from the only time a handling error prevented them from scoring.

Italy had the last laugh, adding two late tries. The first came from Zani, who went over from a lineout maul. Then came yet another piece of Polledri magic as his run initiated a counter-attack which eventually saw Minozzi put the final nail in the coffin.
