PSL Stats: Youngest players used in the 2018/19 season

The PSL doesn’t have quite as many eye-wateringly young players as some other leagues, but there is some impressive young talent knocking on the door.

The PSL season rumbles on while some clubs are busying themselves with the CAF Champions League. We’re also feeling a little bit nostalgic about the 2018 Soccer World Cup, for no particular reason.

One of the things that stood out during that tournament is just how much young talent there is in the world. While not exactly great for the old fogeys who have achieved pretty much nothing, there’s some solace in knowing the future is young and bright.

South Africa’s top-tier competition is no different.

The overall average age of PSL players is just over 27 years – the same as the English Premier League.

But it’s the young talent we’re interested in, so here’s a list of some of the youngest players who have played in this season’s PSL. As mentioned before, the age listed is the age of the player at the time of the match where he was the youngest.

Augustine Mahlonoko (Orlando Pirates)

Augustine Mohlonoko became just the eight player to make their professional debut in the PSL before their 17th birthy when he fearured for the Bucs against Highlands PArk in 2018. While he’s the youngest of the 2018-19 season at the time of writing, he’s not the youngest ever. That honour is held by Mkhanyiseli Siwahla‚ who was 15 years‚ five months‚ 22 days when he featured for Ajax Cape Town.

Luke Fleurs is already being hyped as Bafana’s next big hope, he made his debut for United against Bloemfontein Celtic back in November 2018.

Goodman Mosele (Baroka)

Goodman Mosele has been a regular for Baroka since making his debut in October 2018, he’s got a nifty two assists so far, most recently to help Baroka draw with Cape Town City.

From here, things are pretty routine. You know, players who aren’t 20 yet, but aren’t so young that they were born in a year you actually remember. We’re not saying that’s not impressive, but we’re just saying that it’s not quite so eye-wateringly agonising as some of the young players elsewhere in the world.

Gift Links joined Cape Town City in 2018 and has featured often. His market value has increased steadily and is currently the highest as it’s ever been. Not bad for a 20-year old.
