Tour de France 2019: De Buyst crashed into a ditch after being elbowed

Jasper De Buyst became acquainted with a ditch on Stage 11 of the Tour de France after being elbowed. But that crash actually makes Caleb Ewan’s win more remarkable since he was held up in the commotion.

The 2019 Tour de France has already had a few crashes – some of which have forced riders to abandon the tour. Alessandro De Marchi’s crash scene was pretty horrific. He suffered multiple fractures and a collapsed lung on Stage 10.

On Stage 11, Niki Terpstra was also forced to abandon the tour after a crash.  The extent of his injuries are not yet known, but it looked like he had hurt his collarbone badly.

But not all crashes come with bad news.

Just ask Stage 11 winner Caleb Ewan. He sprinted to his maiden stage win, which is impressive in itself. But it’s made all the more impressive with you take Jasper De Buyst’s crash into account.

De Buyst fell into a ditch not the side of the peloton during Wednesday’s stage. He eventually got up and carried on, but Ewan was held up in the commotion when it all went down. He worked his way back to the peloton and went on to win the stage. Pretty good effort.

De Buyst’s fall was cushioned by the hay bales on the side of the road, but let’s take a look at how it all unfolded.

One of the riders from Team CCC got squeezed, put out his elbow in an attempt to balance. That, in turn nudged De Buyst who couldn’t keep his balance and sent him tumbling. There was quite clearly no malice, but it does highlight just how quickly accidents can happen on the tour.
