At the start of the day, Proteas captain Temba Bavuma won the toss and opted to bat first on a flat wicket, with the hosts reaching what was probably a relatively sub-par total of 298-7.

When England strode to the crease, it seemed almost certain that this total wouldn’t be good enough as the visitors powered to 150 for the loss of just one wicket.

Jason Roy would go on to score a brilliant 113, while fellow opener Dawid Malan made 59, but from there South Africa chipped away at the England batting lineup as regular wickets began to fall.

Kagiso Rabada and Sisanda Magala were superb with the ball, but the real cameo came from Anrich Nortje as he produced a fiery spell of bowling to end with figures of 4-62 as the game turned on its head as South Africa won by 27 runs.

When it came to the Proteas’ batting effort, Rassie van der Dussen was the star of the show as he compiled a well-paced 111, which was ably supported by David Miller (53).

During this series, the Proteas will be led by caretaker coach Shukri Conrad for the series. The 55-year-old was appointed as South Africa’s new red-ball coach earlier this month, but is taking charge of the team in the interim, before New Zealand-based Rob Walter arrives in the country next month.
