#SAMA28: Chymamusique walks away as evening’s biggest winner

The 28th edition of the South African Music Awards (SAMAs) took place on Saturday 27 August and Sunday 28 August at the Sun City Superbowl in the North West. Mzansi’s biggest night in music was hosted by Lawrence Maleka, Nandi Madida, Mpho Popps and Robot Boii who kept the crowd roaring with laughter. 

House musician Chymamusique was the biggest winner at this year’s SAMAs, taking home three awards. Following closely behind was Zakes Bantwini who won two awards for his chart-topping hit, Osama, featuring Kasango.

Chymamusique won the Male Artist of the Year, Album of the Year and Best Dance Album awards at the SAMAs over the weekend, making him the biggest winner of the evening. 

Taking to Instagram on 28 August to celebrate his awards, the Speak Lord hitmaker wrote: “3 SAMAs in the bag.”

“Lord I thank you, thanks to all my friends who worked with me from the beginning until now and everyone who loves our music.”


Amapiano superstar Musa Keys won his first-ever SAMA for Record of the Year. The multi-talented star scooped the award for his amapiano hit, Vula Mlomo featuring Sir Trill and Nobantu Vilakazi. 

Moments after winning the award, Musa Keys closed out the SAMAs with his global hit, Selema (Po Po) featuring Loui.

The inaugural TikTok Viral Song of the Year award was awarded to Toss, 9umba, Mdoovar, Sino Msolo, Lady Du, Young Stunna and Slade for their hit, Umlando.

Flautist Khanyisile Mthetwa won the White Star Newcomer of the Year Award for her album, African Bird. Mthetwa also won the Best Classical/Instrumental Album Award for the album. 

Hip-hop star Blxckie beat out A-Reece, Emtee, Kid X and 25K to walk away with the Beat Hip-Hop Album Award. This win marked his first-ever SAMA
