‘uBettina Wethu’: Season 2 of SA’s own ‘Ugly Betty’ is ‘definitely happening’

‘New love interests, a longer season, and more vernac’… SABC1’s ‘uBettina Wethu’ has been renewed for a second season!

It’s official: SABC1’s uBettina Wethu will be returning to our screens for season two. The South African version of Ugly Betty, starring Farieda “Pharaofi” Metsileng plays the role of Albertina “Betty” Sikhakhane, a young woman chasing her dreams in Johannesburg.

‘uBettina Wethu’: ‘…WHAT A FIRST SEASON IT WAS’

The first season of uBettina Wethu came to an end this week on Monday 2 August and the show’s Twitter page posted a post-season video to thank fans for tuning in to the show.

“And what a first season it was. Thank you to all our viewers for making #uBettinaWethu one of the most loved TV shows in Mzansi. Keep your eyes glued to our social media platforms for updates. We can’t wait to be back.”

New longer season with more episodes

Entertainment reporter Phil Mphela tweeted about the show’s renewal on Friday 30 July, and mentioned that there will be more episodes in the new season.

“The SABC1 show will be getting another season with more episodes, according to the producers. Production on the new season hasn’t started but it is expected to happen this year,” he tweeted.


Season one of uBettina Wethu follows Betty who has big dreams of working in the fashion publishing industry. She receives an opportunity to be the personal assistant of Nubia Magazine’s new editor-in-chief, Dingani Jiyane, played by Zweli Dube.

Just like Ugly Betty, Sikhakhane deals with insecurities as she navigates a superficial environment in a busy city.

‘uBettina Wethu’: ‘Expect new love interests’

The rest of the young cast members, are: Tsholofelo Mashishi as Linda Jiyane, Lesego ‘Coconut Kelz’ Tlhabi as Zaza Moloi, Motshabi Tyelele as Ethel, Brighton Ngoma as T-Bang Moeketsi, Jason Willemse as Wendell and Alex Sono as Reggie.

In an article published in The Citizen, director and producer of uBettina Wethu, Tshepiso Chikapa-Phiri, says fans should be excited for season 2:

All I can say is season 2 is definitely happening and viewers should expect new love interests, a longer season, and more vernac. We are looking to bring more South African languages going into season 2
