The South African Music Awards (SAMAs) are one of the most anticipated music events of the year. A number of artists from across the country are recognised in an array of categories and this year is set to be more spectacular despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking to Channel24, the SAMAs spokesperson Lesley Mofokeng vowed that this year’s awards show would be a “one-night extravaganza”. Mofokeng highlighted that the event’s organizers are working on creating more of a live feel.

The official date for the 27th annual SAMA’s is 31 July and the event’s hosts are yet to be announced.

Recording Industry South Africa (RiSA) CEO Nhlanhla Sibisi said they are thrilled to have the SAMAs return to SABC 1.

“We promise a show befitting the calibre of musicians nominated this year. Against all odds and the challenges of Covid-19 lockdown we have managed to curate a memorable one-night extravaganza experience that will be entertaining and keep our loyal audiences on the edge of their seats.”

The SAMAs will hand out over 40 awards to deserving artists. This year’s SAMA awards is also a historic moment because it is the first time awards will be handed out in the newly founded Best Amapiano, Best Gqom and Best Kwaito album categories.

Amapiano star Kabza de Small leads the pack of nominees with a whopping six nominations while Sun-EL Musician has five. Besides scoring nominations in the Album of the Year, Male Artists of the Year and Best Amapiano Album categories, his joint album with DJ Maphorisa, Once Upon A Time in Lockdown secured a nod in Duo/Group of the Year.

Jerusalema hit maker Master KG was presented with his first award from the SAMAs. He was presented with an International Achievement Recognition award for Jerusalema featuring Nomcebo Zikode.

The SAMAs will also recognise legendary musicians  PJ Powers, Lebo M, and Lindelani Mkhize with lifetime achievement awards. These three artists have contributed plenty to the South African music scene.
