The Tragedy of Macbeth is a 2021 historical thriller written and directed by Joel Coen. The feature film is based on William Shakespeare’s play Macbeth, which was first performed in 1606.

The film stars Denzel Washington as Macbeth, Frances McDormand as Lady Macbeth, Alex Hassell as Ross, Bertie Carvel as Banquo and Corey Hawkins as Macduff.

In an interview with The New York Times, Coen shared that his decision to take on The Tragedy of Macbeth was deliberate, as he wanted to do something out of the box.

“It was an opportunity to go out of the wheelhouse that I’d been in before. It’s something that demanded I do that.”

Washington shared with the publication that Coen worked with him specifically on his diction.

“He would always talk to me about my R’s,” said Washington.

“‘Make sure you hit the hard R’s.’ He was obsessed with R’s. I’m like, ‘Okay, arrre you sure?’ He was crazy about it,”  Washington joked.
