South Africa’s fine jewel, Cape Town, has been crowned as the world’s best festival and event destination – this was confirmed by none other than the 2021 World Travel Awards.

Other fine cities of the world may have suffered less of the COVID-19 pandemic by hosting celebrated events in the past two years compared to Cape Town, yet the mother city has become a world-beater once again.

We all know of the international events Cape Town is famous for, but let us name-drop anyways: Cape Town Jazz Festival, Kirstenbosch summer concerts, Rocking the Daisies, Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, and SA Cheese Festival.

Reacting to the news of becoming 2021 best festival and event destination, Cape Town’s Economic Growth Mayoral Committee Member Alderman James Vos said;

“It’s a real feather in Cape Town’s cap that we’re still being recognised for the stellar events we’re synonymous with.”

“This award is a celebration of our city on a global stage. It’s evidence that people everywhere have a special place in their hearts for our festivals and annual events calendar.

So what else makes the city special besides its sheer natural beauty? Vos said the town’s diverse cultures is nothing to be undervalued.

“The joy of Cape Town is its diversity. Our wealth of experiences reflects our rich melting pot of heritages and cultures.”

One of the event’s leading organisers said scooping the award during the current COVID-19 coronavirus climate is extraordinary for any city.

“Winning tourism’s top honour this year is more important and more valuable than ever before. With the anticipated return of global tourism, the dominant trend among travellers is for extra indulgence and a determination to book with only the very best,” said Graham Cooke, founder of the World Travel Awards.

“My heartfelt congratulations once again to you and all the team behind this incredible and richly deserved achievement.”

Meanwhile, winning the world’s best festival and event destination also means more immediate responsibility on the serious matters of the day.

Capetonians and citizens across Mzansi have been reminded to vaccinate for COVID-19 as the struggle continues.

“South Africa’s already flailing tourism and hospitality sectors are in dire need of support through domestic travel,” said Cape Town Tourism CEO Enver Duminy.

“Find Your Freedom by getting vaccinated and then exploring Cape Town – Travel & Leisure’s Best City to visit in Africa and the Middle East, and now, the leading city for festivals and events as well.”
