Teenage girl accused of killing man, granted bail

On the bail, the mother says she hopes that her son’s murder will not be just another statistic and that the perpetrator will rot in jail.

The suspect, a 17-year-old teenage girl, was arrested on a charge of murder after she allegedly stabbed him with a broken bottle.

FAMILY OF THE VICTIM DISAPPOINTED BY BAIL APPROVAL

The 23-year-old Zolani Toyana was brutally murdered in Khayelitsha last weekend. The family was disappointed after the suspect was granted bail for just R1,000.

According to his family, Toyana had met a group of five teenage girls at a tavern last weekend. He had allegedly asked one of them to go home with him. An argument started after the girl’s sister intervened, saying she could not go with him.

VICTIM DIED ON THE SCENE

The accused sister broke a beer bottle and allegedly started stabbing the victim in the stomach. The other four girls have allegedly joined in. Toyana died on the scene.

The suspect appeared in Khayelitsha court on Tuesday 20 February and was granted bail for only R1,000. The matter was postponed to 19 April for further investigation.

Magistrate X Mfethi said there was no evidence she would violate her bail conditions and released her on strict conditions. This includes her visiting Khayelitsha during the investigation period and talking to State witnesses.

FAMILY MEMBERS ON THE CASE

Zukiswa Toyana, Zolani’s mother, expressed her disappointment, stating that the person who took her son’s life was walking free, as reported by AllAfrica.

“She killed my son like a dog but she gets to pay a lousy R1,000, will that bring my son back?” she asked. Toyana says she hopes that her son’s murder will not be just another statistic and that the perpetrator will rot in jail.

National Prosecuting Authority regional spokesperson, Erica Ntabazalila confirmed that the suspect was granted bail of R1,000 and that her case was postponed to 19 April for further investigation.
