An unemployed mother of five from Oudtshoorn in the Western Cape won the R14 million Lotto jackpot that was drawn on Wednesday, 8 December. The national lottery operator Ithuba said the lucky winner supported her family with “the minimum social grant.”

OUDTSHOORN WOMAN WINS BIG

According to Ithuba, the woman purchased an R80 ticket in Oudtshoorn and opted for the manual selection method.

“I am extremely happy and grateful to have won this jackpot, I have a big family and we all still live together in our small home.

“This is an opportunity for me to move to a better area and to build a bigger house,” said the woman.

The woman from the “Ostrich Capital” of South Africa in the Little Karoo region has been unemployed and struggled to make ends meet, according to Ithuba.

“The latest winner’s story is one of hope for people who depend on government’s social grants, and are unable to find employment to sustain themselves and their families,” said the Lotto operator in a statement on Thursday, 16 December.

Ithuba CEO Charmaine Mabuza said Lotto winners are offered trauma counselling as winning a large sum of money can be quite overwhelming. Winners are also offered free financial advice.
