Police kill armed bus robber – IPID investigates
A 20-year-old man was shot and killed by Cape Town police on Monday after he allegedly pointed a firearm at officers.

Three armed suspects allegedly robbed the passengers of a Golden Arrow bus in Cape Town on Monday, 7 February. Nearby police officers responded to the scene and fatally wounded one of the suspects after he allegedly aimed a firearm at them.
POLICE SHOOT SUSPECT
According to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), passengers were disembarking from the bus at the corner of Eisleben and Sheffield Road in Philippi East when three unknown men climbed aboard.
One of the suspects pointed a firearm at the bus driver while the other two stripped passengers of their cellphones and handbags.
“Members of the public alerted [South African Police Service] members patrolling in the area. All three suspects got out of the bus when they saw the SAPS members,” said IPID spokesperson Grace Langa.
When the suspects encountered the police one of them pointed a firearm in the direction of the officers, who opened fire in return.
“Police shot at him and he died on the crime scene, the other two suspects got away,” said the IPID spokesperson.
The deceased was 20 years old and was identified by his family. Two handbags, a cellphone and a firearm were found in his possession.
IPID in the Western Cape has opened an inquest docket.
Golden Arrow Bus Company spokesperson Bronwen Dyke-Beyer said the shooting took place at approximately 14:00.
