CITY READY FOR MATRIC PARTIES

MayCo Member for Security, JP Smith, said attention would be paid to popular gathering spots, including beaches, clubs and other party hotspots.

“These celebrations are a focal point each year, and the City congratulates everyone who passed. To those who didn’t make it, please don’t give up – success comes in many different forms, and at different times.

“But whether its celebrations or commiserations, I want to appeal to our young people to do so responsibly. Each year, our beaches are popular celebration spots … but also clubs and other hangouts around the City,” said Smith.

Revellers are reminded not to drink in public places, especially around water bodies, and to ensure they surround themselves with people they trust and have designated drivers.

The City noted an increase in the confiscation of alcohol from the public during the festive season. The latest Law Enforcement statistics show that between 1 December 2022 and 13 January 2023, 20 854 bottles of alcohol have been seized at beaches and other public spaces, which amounts to 9 872.37 litres.

The matric class of 2022 achieved an 80.1% pass rate, the highest since 2019’s 81.3%. All nine provinces improved on their 2021 matric exam performance and hit a pass rate above 70%. The Free State finished top of the pile again with 88.5%.
