Cape Town: Five people die in Friday morning fire near Khayelitsha

Five bodies were found after Cape Town firefighters extinguished a blaze in Nonquebela Site B on Friday morning.

Five people died in an early morning structural fire in Nonqubela Site B near Khayelitsha, Cape Town on Friday, 18 February.

FIVE DIE IN CAPE TOWN FIRE

Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson Jermaine Carelse said an alert about an informal structure on fire in Bhemye Crescent came through at 1:50.

“The crew from Lansdowne Road Fire Station was soon on the scene where firefighters found a structure fully engulfed in flames,” said Carelse.

The firefighters managed to quickly extinguish the blaze. Unfortunately, the occupants did not survive.

The bodies of five people – who are yet to be identified – were discovered. They had suffered fatal burn wounds.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) took over the scene at 3:15.

CHAPMAN’S PEAK FIRE BROUGHT UNDER CONTROL

In an unrelated incident, a fire broke out along Chapman’s Peak after 18:00 on Thursday evening. Table Mountain National Park and the City’s Fire and Rescue Service sent two helicopters to help suppress the fire.

The fire was contained at approximately 19:55 with no injuries reported. The helicopters returned to base and fire crews mopped up the area.
