Bonteheuwel mom struck by stray bullet while walking with daughter

‘She was caught in a crossfire of two rival gangs, the Funkies and the Playboys in Citrus Street, Bonteheuwel, where a bullet meant for a gangster was used to kill her,’ said Ward Councillor Angus McKenzie.

A mother from Bonteheuwel, Cape Town was shot and killed on Sunday night, 12 December. She was reportedly crossing a street with her daughter when a stray bullet struck her.

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said the mother was shot in the head and declared dead at the scene.

“According to reports, Bishop Lavis police members attended to a complaint of a shooting where they found the victim with a gunshot wound to the head,” said van Wyk to EWN.

Bonteheuwel Ward Councillor Angus McKenzie identified the victim as a woman named Nicky who was walking with her five-year-old child.

“She was caught in a crossfire of [two] rival gangs, the Funkies and the Playboys in Citrus Street, Bonteheuwel, where a bullet meant for a gangster was used to kill her,” said McKenzie.

McKenzie said the community provided the authorities with valuable information throughout the night, which has been passed along to the relevant law enforcement agencies.

“Seeing the amount of information come through is hugely motivating during this time,” said the Ward Councillor. “I can assure the family and friends that no stone will be left unturned, the pressure being placed on gangsters in Bonteheuwel is relentless and it will continue.”

The police are investigating a murder investigation. No arrests have been made thus far.
