SUMMARY:

One of the 12 cheetahs relocated from South Africa to India has died, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) confirmed on Thursday, 27 April. Another animal transported from Namibia died as well. The Department said the animals were moved to India in February 2023 as part of an initiative to expand the cheetah meta-population and reintroduce the big cats to a former range state.

The other South African cheetahs are in large enclosures and are monitored twice daily from a distance because they are wild cheetahs. Earlier this year, India and South Africa signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Cooperation on the Reintroduction of Cheetahs to India.
