First Durban and now the City of Tshwane; the ANC’s candidate lists for the August 3 Local Government Elections brought chaos to two of South Africa’s major cities and with six weeks left until the elections, who knows what damage the ruling party’s factionalism could still cause.

While secretary general of the ANC Gwede Mantashe says that the riots are not, in fact, because of party factions’ disapproval of mayoral candidate Thoko Didiza; ANC members branding party colours seem to be telling a different story.

eNCA’s got a series of reports on what’s been happening in the other capital so far, have a look.

Mamelodi has been hit the hardest since violence broke out:

People wearing ANC T-shirts were seen at the scene where two Putco and 19 municipal buses were set alight. A public health clinic was also set on fire yesterday.

When the violence broke out, SAPS and ANC members prevented journalists from photographing the destruction, and where there weren’t people blocking access there were fires and man-made blockades.
