Cellphone footage of the incident shows the man attacking the police officer, getting him in an underarm grip and shouting that he’s going to kill him, in Afrikaans.

SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo told News24 that the man was arrested, that a case was opened and that he had been released on R500 bail by the Mookgopong Magistrate’s Court.

In the video, recorded by one of the officers at the station, you can see the two guys going at it while another tries to break up the scuffle and pleading with the Afrikaans man not to kill the policeman, 50-year-old warrant officer Godfrey Matlala, after he had repeatedly shouted “I am going to shoot you.”

“I will kill him, he wants to kill me, why does he take the gun out of the safe?” The 26-year-old assailant responds after the officer removes a weapon from a nearby safe.

Things might have got a lot worse had the third guy not removed the gun on the floor from the situation as quickly as he did. According to Mojapelo, the man and his wife came to the police station to lay a complaint of theft, but things quickly got out of hand.

“He became impatient…he assaulted the individual after [the officer took] a gun out of the safe,” he said.

No matter how short your temper, assaulting someone who’s almost twice your age and a police officer is just not on. The man will be back I court to answer for the incident on may 3.
