If it wasn’t for Trevor Noah, we really don’t know where America would find its voice of reason. The Daily Show host has delivered a word-perfect summary of the faux-outrage surrounding the Black Panther movie.

Let’s look at three films together: Harry Potter. Lord of the Rings. Black Panther. All three have something in common: they predominantly feature one race of actors over others. Guess which one has caused people to lose their shit, though…

Cinema-goers have been dressing up as wizards and hobbits for years. No-one batted an eyelid. Sure, we made memes and jokes, yet it was never seen as an issue.

Wakanda pride

But when a “certain group” of people don their traditional African regalia and celebrate a culture that belongs to them, we get the moaners. Trevor Noah used his Between the Scenes feature to talk about the response; you better believe he nailed it.

Noah accepted that Black Panther may be a victim of its own hype. However, he compared the movie to Wonder Woman: it’s objectively a good film, but it’s extra-special for women who feel empowered by the characters. That’s what Black Panther is doing for the black community.

Trevor Noah talks Black Panther

“We’ve now got people saying ‘oh, can you imagine if white people made their own movie’? Well, yes. You’re thinking of ‘movies’ in general!”

“It’s a fun movie, people can go, have a good time, it’s dope. It was extra-special for me because people speak Xhosa in the movie. There were subtitles, but I didn’t need them. Get rid of them!”

“Every single black woman kicks ass and takes names in that movie. People enjoy it, because it’s a film that gives us powerful black women”
