Spanish Grand Prix: First lap smash causes carnage in Barcelona [video]

When you see a wheel flying off, you know it’s bad.

After two days of qualifying and rigorous pre-match warm-ups, it was all over before it had even begun for three F1 drivers at the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday.

Romain Grosjean, Nico Hulkenberg and Pierre Gasly all collided with each other less than a minute into the race. Grosjean’s Haas span wildly out of control and left Hulkenberg (Renault) and Gasly (Toro Rosso) with no chance of avoiding his clapped-out motor.

All three drivers had no choice to retire from the race. With wheels flying and rear ends smashed to bits, only a car from The Flintstones would have been able to carry on round the track after that.
