Two South African expats met for the first time in New York for their own take on Carpool Karaoke…and it seems the rest is history.

That was the words of Lyla Illing, a singer and entertainment reporter who grew up in South Africa.

Lyla met up with SA actor and model, Edwin Gagiano for their own rendition of Halsey’s ‘Bad at Love’.

“Remember the guy from the Tayota Aygo advert who pretends to own the car so that he could get attention from girls passing by?… well, he called to let me know that he was in town and picked me up in his (own) car (he swears it’s his but I still had my doubts!),” Lyla wrote on Facebook.

“He tortured me in New York traffic for 3 odd hours … And now I know why my mom warned me not to get into cars with strangers. Such a fun day!”

The video is said to be filmed in West Manhattan under Roadrage KareokeRoadrage Kareoke is a project started by Edwin where he travels across the United States and abroad to perform casual covers with artists.

On YouTube, it was written: “We would like to hear your requests and see this project grow so that more singers will get the exposure they deserve. Thanks for the support!”

Later Edwin posted a live Facebook link of Lyla singing Avril Lavigne hits, saying:

“Not only did I get to share the sound waves with this beautiful artist, but I got to make a brand new friend and I’M A FAN!!!!! Lyla Illing I had such a big crush on Avril when I was 13 and you’re killing it!”
