Watch: Chaos reigns as looters help themselves to beer truck’s lost load [video]

We’ve all had this fantasy at least once in our lives, but in reality, a beer truck losing its load can be a bit of a bummer. Especially for the unlucky sod who’s behind the wheel.

The dreams of many local residents in Beacon Valley, Mitchell’s Plain came true on Monday afternoon after the driver of an SAB delivery truck was left flabbergasted by his unfortunate predicament: Bottles of beer come flying off the shelves like they’re on offer during happy hour

Mitchell’s Plain locals loot the beer truck

Dozens of people venture into the road, sidestepping broken glass, to help themselves to a free midweek tipple. Traffic comes to a standstill and horns are blaring as residents get stuck into crates, loose bottles and whatever ale they can get their hands on.

One bloke even grabs on to the back of the truck as it makes its getaway. The driver cautiously pokes his way forward, as the remainder of his load stays unsecured and vulnerable to the elements. Of course, the residents of the Cape Flats are used to a completely different kind of “load-shedding” these days, but we think they prefer this type.

“Regret nothing”

There was also a rather dark irony to this particular gaffe: The SAB’s anti-drink driving slogan reads “regret nothing” and provides the perfect backdrop for the opportunists who know a good offer when they see one.

Sadly, even a few kids get roped into the chaos, as they scramble to claim whatever they can get their hands on. The person taking the video gives a hilarious commentary of what’s going on, labelling the looters “pathetic” in their pursuit of both beer and wine.
