On Friday, news emerged that a Robben Island ferry that was used to transport staff needed to be rescued.

If you don’t like boats, then look away now. EWN posted footage of the dramatic rescue on Twitter.

Sixty-eight crew members and passengers have been safely rescued and brought to the harbour. One member who was on the boat was taken to the hospital and treated for hypothermia.

The NSRI’s Craig Lambinon said: “Some passengers have been treated at the scene for mild hypothermia. Furthermore, all passengers are accounted for and safe. Efforts are underway to recover the passenger ferry.”

The ferry sprung a leak and the South African Maritime Safety Authority will now investigate what caused the ferry to leak.

An incoming black South Easter made the rescue effort intense and extremely dangerous.
