A brutal confrontation at Mugg & Bean between a man and his former father-in-law resulted in the former losing a finger, after he was attacked with a panga.

The 52-year-old was arrested shortly after the incident. ENCA report he was also armed with a gun and threatened to use it before being disarmed.

Adam Filmalter is the owner of the coffee house chain. He explained the situation to the news channel, describing the terrifying attack at the Bedford Centre Mall in Johannesburg:

“It quickly got out of hand and we called for security, one of the men pulled out a panga, he aimed at him and missed a few times.”

“That’s when he pulled out a gun, luckily one of my customers threw a chair at the man in an attempt to disarm him. It could have been a completely different story if he hadn’t done that.”

What provoked the attack?

Whilst the son-in-law recovers in hospital, the father-in-law now faces charges of assault, with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm.

ENCA further report the incident escalated because of how the son-in-law was reacting to a divorce. It is said that his wife decided to end their marriage and he had not been able to accept her decision.

Andre de Jager is a police spokesperson for Bedfordview SAPS. He says that the man in his fifties has shed light on the case in his statement.

The statement claims that the son-in-law was actually intimidating his daughter. The pair had agreed to meet to talk things out, but clearly, it all boiled over.

A brief video of the incident was shared by the news station. It shows the aftermath of the attack, with the victim missing a finger and nursing his wounds. Blood is covering most of his top, with some splattered across the mall floor.
