One of the most mesmerizing demonstrations at Google’s I/O conference earlier this week was a simple, yet creepy phone call.

During Google’s annual developer conference, they made a lot of announcements, especially those related to advancing the company’s artificial intelligence. But one, in particular, was wonderfully weird: CEO Sundar Pichai played a phone call recording that he said was made by Google Assistant to a real hair salon.

Google Assistant will soon be able to make phone calls on your behalf all while sounding like a real human. The ‘assistant’s’ voice sounds completely natural. In the recording, the person on the other end had no idea they were talking to a digital AI helper. The assistant even threw in a casual “mmmmm” early in the conversation.

“The amazing thing is that Assistant can actually understand the nuances of conversation,” Pichai said. “We’ve been working on this technology for many years. It’s called Google Duplex. It brings together all our investments over the years in natural language understanding, deep learning, text-to-speech.”

Google Assitant will also notify you when you’re appointment has been made. But what if things go differently than you’d expect it to?

“We have many examples of calls where things don’t go as expected, but Assistant understands the context, the nuance, and how to handle the interaction gracefully.”

Google is currently still busy developing the technology and hopes to get it right.

“Done correctly it will save time for people and generate a lot of value for businesses,” said Pichai further.

Google is also working on a feature that will update the public on the opening and closing hours of businesses. Watch the video to see how Google Assitant will make phone calls for you and how Google is expanding it’s AI:

Other topics of discussion included Gmail which can autocomplete emails as of now with a with a new feature called Smart Compose.

According to The Verge, the upcoming version of the Android operating system, Android P is shaping up to be one of the most consequential Android updates in years. Not only is Google changing the way Android is navigated, but it’s also changing the way we interact with our phones — and how our phones interact with us. The big goals of Android P are to make our phones less distracting and less stressful and to give people control over how much of their attention they suck up. It’s all about taking on notification and app overload.
