No, YOU’RE crying. In one of the more emotional videos you’re likely to see this week, workers at the Retail Crossing supermarket in Ruimsig‚ Gauteng have gone viral for their performance of Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika. As it turns out, it’s for a very special someone.

As TimesLive report, Brett Nash is 14 years old and has several medical conditions that have affected his development. Cruelly, only one of those – distal arthrogryposis – has actually been identified.

Life isn’t easy for the Nash family, but thanks to these supermarket superheroes, they have a wonderful place where Brett can go and enjoy his best life.

In the video, we see the Spar employees deliver a vibrant and vivacious version of the national anthem, much to Brett’s sheer delight. Although the teenager is unable to speak, he thoroughly involves himself in the rousing performance.

However, this wasn’t just a one-off act of kindness. No, these Ruimsig staff members have been doing this for over five years, according to Brett’s mom Tammy. She explained how this routine began, and it’s all thanks to one keen-eared store employee:

“This happens every evening when we go there and it started five or six years ago. He loves going there. Brett is non-verbal but he is always humming a tune and one time‚ one of the staff picked up on him humming the national anthem and they joined him [in singing it]‚”

Ayanda‚ Lorraine or Lerato are named as the angelic souls who have strived to make the Nash’s visits as memorable as possible with their Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika rendition.

It’s not just a song and dance that raises Brett’s spirits, though. The entire outlet loves involving him in their daily routine – he even gets to have a go on one of the cleaner’s machines if their paths cross.

South Africa has a long way to go before anyone could consider it a utopia. But seeing something so beautifully sweet will always remind us just how great this country – and our people – really can be.
