Haibo umlungu!

Dear White People

With 11 official languages in South Africa, it comes as no surprise that people of Mzanzi express themselves with a vocab peppered with words and phrases that have crept in from all languages – regardless of our personal mother tongue.

For the cast of Dear White People, they had a challenge on their hands.

To mark the launch of season two (which dropped on Netflix platform on 4 May), the cast of hit series Dear White People had a go at pronouncing and guessing the meaning of some of our widely used local phrases. The results, as you would expect, are rather hilarious.

If you’re a fan of the series, you will absolutely love seeing your favourite (and very very American) cast members try to guess what the hell “haibo” and “gatvol” mean and how they’re used in a sentence.

Make sure you prepare yourself in advance, though. “Ghat-varl” is how these American stars pronounce it.

If you loved Dear White People, here are a few other shows on Netflix South Africa we think you’ll also enjoy:

DUDE

DUDE is a grounded comedy about dealing with first losses in life — leaving your best friends, the death of loved ones, and the passage of time — and that odd mixture of grief and nostalgia experienced by young people as they try to understand these losses.

It is also about getting stoned with your friends in your car while listening to hip-hop.

She’s Gotta Have It

The 10-episode series is a contemporary update of Spike Lee’s revolutionary debut independent film. She’s Gotta Have It centers on Nola Darling, a Brooklyn-based artist in her late twenties struggling to define herself and divide her time amongst her Friends, her Job and her Three Lovers: The Cultured Model, Greer Childs, The Protective Investment Banker, Jamie Overstreet and Da Original B-Boy Sneakerhead, Mars Blackmon.

On My Block

On My Block, co-created by Lauren Iungerich (Awkward), Eddie Gonzalez and Jeremy Haft (All Eyez On Me), is a coming of age comedy about four bright and street-savvy friends navigating their way through the triumph, pain and the newness of high-school set in LA’s South Central neighbourhood.
