Beyoncé and Jay-Z – who perform together as The Carters – won Best International Group at the Brit Awards on Thursday evening. However, their acceptance speech deserves an accolade of its own after they paid the best possible tribute to Meghan Markle.
The married couple showed they were right behind the Duchess of Sussex, during a time where the British tabloids are getting up to their old tricks once more. Publications like The Sun and The Daily Mail have been accused of hounding Markle in the same way they did with Princess Diana in the 1990s.
Rumours of a fallout with her sister-in-law Kate Middleton have intensified over recent weeks, and the UK-based press has revelled in the chaos. But if you could choose to have two people to fight your corner, Beyoncé and Jay-Z would be right at the top of your list.

The clip starts by zooming out of an old-fashioned portrait of Meghan Markle, adorned in royal regalia while looking positively queen-like. The Carters thank their fans, before turning round to acknowledge their monarch. It’s wonderfully subtle, and just a little bit touching.
The Duchess may not be feeling the love in the UK, but this show of solidarity from her fellow Americans is the vote of confidence she needs right now. Queens recognise queens, and that’s the truth.
