Guys, we get so excited when South Africans slay on the global stage and have their inventions featured by the global media.

South African’s have come up with some pretty great things. Lebohang W Khitsane is no different.

You  might have seen his work before. He made headlines last year when television star Joe “Sdumo” Mafela passed away. Mafela’s tombstone… well it was more than just a standard old tombstone really it was… argh, let’s just show you.

Can you deal?

Well, now Khitsane has been featured on the BBC for his… err.. interesting work. His company is called Bataung Memorial Tombstones… and he has an elite list of clients.

But things don’t always go smoothly.

Veteran music producer, Robbie Malinga’s tombstone, for example, had to have a complete redesign. Malinga died of pancreatic cancer on Chirstmas Day in 2017. The initial tombstone was dragged on social media, because it did not resemble the music icon.

The new one, however, was deemed a great success. At the time, TimesLive reported:

CEO of Bataung Memorials, Lebohang, Khitsane, said he had to change everything and make something that has more character and embodies Robbie’s life better.

“It took a week and half to complete the work with a team of six artists assigned to redo the face. I’m really happy with the outcome. We made a lot of changes so that it represents the life of a singer.”

And now Kitsane has been featured on the BBC. If you are having trouble viewing the video below, you can watch it on the BBC here.

Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it, guys. And don’t hate because you didn’t think of the idea first.
