Summer in Joburg: Best pools in the city for a swim

Wondering where you can swim in Johannesburg? Here are all of the pools worth heading to in the city for a visit this summer season.

Joburgers are notorious for flocking to the coast during the December period. If, however, you’re unable to head to the beach, why not go for a swim at one of these city-side pools?

Happy Island Waterworld

Location: Muldersdrift

Happy Island Waterworld is Africa’s largest water park. Visit with the whole family for a day filled with water-based entertainment and thrills, from slides to pools Africa’s biggest wave pool. This is the kind of place you’ll want to spend the entire day at, hopping from one massive slide to the next. 

Poolside

Location: Maboneng

Poolside has a bar and pool, perfect to unwind in while you’re in the inner city. Stepping into Poolside, you’ll see a white-clad haven, fit everything that screams summer: lounge chairs, palm trees and blue waters. Enjoy a drink at the bar on a day out, or attend one of the various hosted parties held here.

Pine Resorts

Location: Krugersdorp

Typical resort style pools and slides are just a short drive away. This is where you want to be for a relaxed fun day in the sun, igniting your inner child. Slip down the slides, lay on the grass and of course, take a dip in the pools.

StokeCity

Location: Midrand

The ultimate Wipe Out challenge awaits you at this inflatable waterpark on a dam. Strap on your lifejacket and prepare for a lot of laughter as you climb, jump and swing from one end to the other. You’re given one hour to enjoy the park, which we’re sure will wear you out, in the best possible way.

Location: Hyde Park

Prepare to see some incredible views from this deck. Perfect for sunsets and days or nights out when you just want to dress up and sip on cocktails that are as expensive as you’ll look and feel. Simply sit on one of the sun loungers, place your order and bask in sight of Joburg from the infinity pool.

San Deck Sandton Sun 

Location: Sandton

The Rooftop Pool is a pretty oasis above the buzz of Sandton City. Order drinks and food in the heart of Sandton, from your table, seat in the swinging nest chairs or spot around the boma. You’ll be close to the splash pool either way, which has an open invitation for your to test the waters.

Nicci Beach

Location: Boksburg

Here, you’ll find a bar, a pool and some slides. There’s a dance floor too, so you’re in for an experience. Regulars who stay close-by frequent Nicci Beach and it may be worth finding out why it’s such a firm fav. Either way, you’ll get to say you went to the beach.

Ellis Park Swimming Pool

Location: Ellis Park

No list of pools in the city would be complete without a mention of a public pool, which Joburg is filled with, and can be enjoyed without the water restrictions faced by our fellow Cape Townian’s. This is your best bet, as you’re right in the city, with 3 pools to choose from, one of which is olympic size ready for you to lap up … literally.

The Sands

Location: Sandton

The laid-back yet still oh-so-Joburg. Not a flip flop in sight, where you can swim, drink and dance. Expect good music in a tried-and-tested formula for the most chilled, festive afternoon-to-evening hangouts with your mates.
