Mike Ratcliffe, Chairperson of Visit Stellenbosch recently revealed an exciting new project called the Support Stellenbosch Restaurant Rewards Campaign which was launched in order to jumpstart the town’s struggling economy.

A ‘united community’

Due to the national lockdown, it is said that the former tourist mecca cannot support all the restaurants, bars, and theatres that you would expect in a world city many times its size. At it’s the centre is also, of course, South Africa’s formerly world-renowned, lockdown-obliterated wine industry. Now, they are pushing for a swift recovery towards full employment with their new campaign.

On its official website, it states:

“Stellenbosch, the culinary capital of South Africa, is presenting a delicious Support Stellenbosch Restaurant Rewards Campaign. In simple terms, the campaign rewards in-dining restaurant customers with a SnapScan voucher, redeemable at participating restaurants within the campaign period, giving you an excuse to eat out and support Stellenbosch restaurants.”

How it works

“We’ve partnered with Stellenbosch company SnapScan,” Ratcliffe later told Cape Talk. “Anybody that goes to a restaurant in Stellenbosch and pays with SnapScan automatically gets up to 50% of their bill refunded as a voucher up to a maximum of R400. That becomes useable to spend at any other restaurant or hospitality establishment in Stellenbosch. But it does expire! We’ve raised the cash – restaurants immediately get 100% of the cash owed to them. The money is all coming from Stellenbosch – the community is united.”

The project, which kicked off a few weeks ago, is now said to be live.

“We’ve open-planned the technology… so that anybody can take it on,” he said further.

You can find participating restaurants on Visit Stellenbosch’s official website. Of these are, Bartinney, Bellevue Wine Estate, The Fat Butcher, Joostenberg Bistro, Vadas Smokehouse and Bakery, Pink Valley Wine, De Warenmarkt, Longridge Wines and many more.
