Sun City, said to be the biggest single tourism industry employer in the North West province, will officially reopen for business on 2 September 2020.

The strictest principles of hygiene and cleanliness

According to their official website, Sun City’s hotels and casino will reopen where they will adhere to “the strictest principles of hygiene and cleanliness at all of our hotels, casinos and other facilities”. They have been closed since just before the initial ‘hard’ national lockdown in late March. Now, South African regulations under both Level 3 and Level 2 stipulate that casinos can only operate at 50% capacity due to social distancing and other COVID-19 health protocols.

Sun City stipulated on their website:

“In addition to our ongoing cleaning schedules, we have introduced additional enhanced practices in all areas, including temperature checks and complete a medical screening questionnaire, making hand sanitizers available at all entrances to hotels, the casino, conference areas, as well as on public transport at Sun City. These are also available in staff areas.”

Especially pleased

According to MoneyWeb, Sun International group COO for hospitality Graham Wood welcomed the move to Level 2, which was announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa. Considering that “the large majority of Sun City’s visitors are from outside North West” province, Wood is especially pleased that inter-provincial travel is now allowed.

“To say we are delighted by this news would be an understatement. With inter-provincial travel restrictions lifted our tourist hotels and resorts such as Sun City Resort will finally be able to reopen. It is unfortunate that the [22:00] curfew could not be further relaxed, but we are grateful and relieved that our restaurants can again serve alcohol,” he added.

“Our casinos have been operating since 1 July and customers have been very supportive, but the curfew has hurt our business by reducing operating hours at a time when numbers on the floor already had to be limited, so we are hopeful that this can be relaxed or lifted soon. Our current health and safety protocols will remain in place, and all Sun International properties now bear the World Travel and Tourism Council’s (WTTC) safe stamp of approval.”

Who can enter?

Due to limitations on capacity, access to Sun City Resort will only be granted to Hotel and Sun Vacation Club residents, Sun MVG members and guests with confirmed golf bookings. Only one lane at the front entrance will be opened to service guests while the casino will only be accessible to Sun MVG cardholders.
