Mozambique has been forced to tighten its lockdown restrictions to curb rising numbers of COVID-19 infections in the country.

As countries across the world grapple with more severe second waves of infections, lockdowns and stricter restrictions are being widely imposed.

Mozambique’s updated restrictions will apply from Friday 15 January and will be in place for 21 days, Travel News reports.

MOZAMBIQUE A FAVOURITE BEACH DESTINATION FOR SOUTH AFRICANS

Mozambique is a perennial favourite for South Africans who enjoy diving and beach holidays. The country is known for its unspoilt beaches and idyllic islands.

Under the revised lockdown measures, Mozambique’s beaches are off limits, as are its casinos, nightclubs, bars, gyms, cinemas, theatres, museums and galleries.

MOZAMBIQUE’S BORDERS REMAIN OPEN

The country’s borders, however, have not been closed to international travellers.

International visitors are still allowed to travel to Mozambique, but will be required to present a negative COVID-19 test result on arrival. This must be obtained within 72 hours of departure.

SALE OF ALCOHOL STILL PERMITTED

Under Mozambique’s revised lockdown restrictions, the sale of alcohol is still permitted.

However, outlets selling liquor will be subject to restrictions on their trading hours. Alcohol may be sold from Monday to Saturday, but not on Sundays.
