Now that we are finally allowed to hit the road and travel around the Western Cape after months of strict lockdown, Capetonians will undoubtedly be heading into the great wide yonder looking for something fun to do.

Situated in the heart of one of the Cape’s most beautiful mountain regions, Cape Canopy tours have introduced a new way of experiencing nature – from the air on an exhilarating zip-line tour. Listed by Lonely Planet as “vertigo-tinged fun” and “one of the world’s hottest tourism experiences”, this is a must if you are looking for an exciting escape from Cape Town.

Cape Canopy Tours

Situated in the Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve just an hour’s drive from Cape Town, Cape Canopy Tours has partnered with CapeNature to enable guests to see areas that were previously inaccessible in this World Heritage Area, Cape Canopy Tours offers a unique and exhilarating adventure for all ages that will leave lasting memories.

After a hearty welcome and important safety briefing, guests kit up in the appropriate gear and head up into the mountains in 4×4 vehicles. Two professional guides accompany each group to ensure absolute safety, as well as sharing their extensive knowledge of the area’s fauna, flora, and natural geology.

On arriving at your destination high above the clouds, the adventure begins. After being safely clipped onto the zipline, you then slide along steel cables from platform to platform, floating past spectacular waterfalls, deep valleys, and breathtaking natural landscapes. There are 13 platforms in total and slides can be up to 320m long, so you feel as if you are flying.

On reaching the end of the line, a short walk takes you back to the vehicles to return to base camp for a light lunch together and a chance to share your experiences. Each tour lasts between two and four hours, depending on the type of canopy tour and the number of people in the group.

Safety is paramount, so tours are conducted in a relaxed and unrushed environment.

Getting there

The Hottentots Holland Mountains lie in one of the Cape’s most beautiful regions, The Elgin Valley. Stretching from Grabouw in the south to Villiersdorp in the north, it’s rocky, rugged landscapes, bright wildflowers, and glassy natural mountain pools make this region veritable heaven for outdoor enthusiasts.
