Update: WABetaInfo confirmed that, in addition to the animated stickers, WhatsApp developers are working on a new feature to improve and redesign the QR Code section for sharing Group Invites. The feature is still in development but will be rolled out in due course.
“After releasing the first animated sticker pack for iOS and Android beta users, in the new 2.20.195 beta update, there is something else. WhatsApp has finally released a redesign that’s very similar to the personal QR Code feature.”
WABetaInfo reported that WhatsApp had been working on several new features; including the rollout of animated stickers, a new Search By Date function for iOS, as well as new Storage usage tools for Android.
Users will need to update their WhatsApp apps to version 18.104.22.168 in Android Beta, or 22.214.171.124 in iOS Beta (or any newer updates) in order for the change to take effect. This also to both the regular WhatsApp app, and Business WhatsApp.
Previous beta updates, such as 2.20.61 on iOS may also have the animated stickers feature; however, WhatsApp will in most cases only enable new features in the most recent updates.
If you’ve already updated to the new beta version but still don’t see the animated sticker feature, it’s suggested to back up your chat history, delete WhatsApp and reinstall the app.
The Animated Stickers features will consist of three parts:
WhatsApp is currently in the first phase of the rollout; meaning some beta testers will be able to view animated stickers. The WhatsApp developers team is still tinkering away at the feature, so it’s not all set in stone yet.
WhatsApp will roll out all three phases in due course, so the best we could at this stage is simply to wait for the feature to become available.
The team also recently announced that users might be able to use one WhatsApp account from multiple devices, simultaneously. Multi-device support was initially announced in 2019 and users have been waiting patiently ever since.
According to WABeta Info, we can expect a full report in due course.
WhatsApp was also in the process of testing a new colour for the outgoing message bubble when a user has dark mode activated. The current bubble features a dark green colour, while the new colour will be a few shades lighter.
Following the new iOS announcements at Apple’s recent Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), one user suggested to WABI that perhaps “WhatsApp would take advantage of the new iOS 14 home screen widgets”. The user added:
“Having a large widget with additional information would be great. If they did, you just know it will take over 12 months + to implement, even though they can now start working on it”.
