Facebook’s WhatsApp messaging service is a very easy app to set up and add a layer of security to your account. I will list a few steps for security.

Unfortunately, these steps won’t shield you from serious hack attacks. such as the one that hit Jeff Bezos. It will, however, offer you peace of mind in case someone manages to get a hold of your security code through a process is known as “social hacking”.

Jeff Bezos’s hacking really raised some security fear for regular users, but here are a few suggestions and tips.

How to safeguard your WhatsApp account

End-to-end encryption

Users should make sure that their chats are end-to-end encrypted. In order to verify that a chat is end-to-end encrypted: open the chat, tap on the name of the contact then open the contact info screen.

You should then tap Encryption to view the QR code and a 60-digit number. WhatsApp end-to-end encryption ensures that only you and your contact can read the messages that are being exchanged not even WhatsApp can read them.

Deactivate WhatsApp when your phone is stolen or lost

Losing your phone is a very common occurrence, and when it happens, you should deactivate your WhatsApp account immediately before someone gets access to all your personal data.

To deactivate your WhatsApp account, you go to Settings, then press the delete my account option. Enter your phone number and click on “Delete my account”.

If you keep getting random links as messages from your contacts on WhatsApp, then you should first ask about the link from the contact. You should never click on links that you find suspicious.

WhatsApp is allegedly still working on a “suspicious link” feature which will make it easy for users to find out if a link is authentic or not.

I hope these few tricks will give you some peace of mind to give you that extra level of security moving forward.
